The Saltillo Lady Lions hosted the Cooper Lady Bulldogs Tuesday, looking to keep their undefeated season going. After wins in their first two games, the Lady Lions entered the day with a ton of momentum.
The game opened with a back-and-forth first quarter, with neither team able to get an edge over the other. With both teams playing evenly matched, the Lady Lions went into the second quarter tied 8-8.
Cooper was able to find another level in the second quarter, going off for their highest scoring frame of the night. The Lady Lions kept their pace from the first quarter but unfortunately it wasn’t enough, as they found themselves trailing 27-15.
Saltillo came out for the second half with their best frame of the night, both holding Cooper to their lowest scoring quarter of the game, while also having their highest scoring quarter. The Lady Lions were able to put up 11 points in the third quarter, while holding Cooper to just four points, cutting the deficit to 31-25.
Needing to continue to chip away at the deficit the Lady Lions kept up with Cooper the entire final frame, but they were unable to work their way back into the game. Despite a very strong effort in the second half, Saltillo fell just short, taking their first loss of the season by a final score of 42-34.
“I liked our defense, liked our intensity, but we need to improve our scoring,” assistant coach Nick Boekhorst said.
Ryleigh Redear was the leading scorer for the Lady Lions, finishing with nine points. Just behind her were Maysen Pipkin and Gabby Ross, who had eight points and seven points respectively.
Yadhira Alonso added five points to the total, while Julianna Giles had three points and Brianna Tawil had two points.
The Lady Lions will be hosting the Saltillo tournament this weekend. Updates on how they do will be published on Front Porch News.
Saltillo hits a long run of road games after their tournament, with their next home game not being until district play. They return home Tuesday, Dec. 14 to host Sulphur Bluff for the first in a pair of matches between the two teams.
