The Miller Grove Hornets cross country team competed in the state meet Friday, looking to win their fifth consecutive championship. After yet another year of hard work and dedication, it was finally time for the Hornets to capture what they’d worked for all season.

Miller Grove was able to do exactly what they set out to do, coming in first place as a team, winning their fifth consecutive state title. They were led by Lance Davis who’s time of 16:44 was good enough for fourth place overall.

Also placing in the top-10 was senior Tanner Hensley. Hensley’s time of 17:07 put him in ninth place individually. Just behind him was freshman Ryker Haivala who had a great showing in his first state meet. Haivala came in 12th place and ran a time of 17:16.

The Hornets had two other runners finish in the top-20, showing how well-rounded their team is. Bradley Nordin and Kavan Smith finished in 19th place and 20th place respectively, finishing within four seconds of each other.

The accomplishments didn’t stop there for the Hornets, as Lexton Sly finished in 26th place with a time of 18:08. Anthony Lester’s time of 18:24 was good enough for 37th place.

On the girls side of things, Jamilyn Hensley ran as an individual and had a very strong showing. Her time of 13:04 put her in 11th place, missing the top-10 by mere seconds.

The Hornets take the state title with a combined team score of 50. The next closest was the Saltillo Lions, who’s score of 105 put them in second place, while Tilden McMullen finished in third place with 154 points.

“This product has been the culmination of six months of buy-in from these boys/girls,” coach Cody Walker said. “All the early mornings, all the workouts, all the sore muscles and all the thousands of miles put in as a group.”

“Winning is not the tradition of Miller Grove, hard working individuals that believe in the process, trust their coaches, and do everything they ask is. I can not ask for a better group of young men and women. Miller Grove community should be proud.”

Later this week the Miller Grove cross country team will come in to the Chad’s Media studio for an interview to discuss their successful season.
