There are three baptisms found in scripture. There is the baptism of the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ. This is where the Holy Spirit baptizes us into Jesus when we repent of our sins and are saved. Second, there is a water baptism where the old person is cut off and is no more. Third, there is a baptism in the Holy Spirit where power is given.

Few accounts are in all four of the gospels. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John all record the birth of Jesus, the death and resurrection of Jesus, and baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 3:11 – John the Baptist said, “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

Mark 1:8 – I have baptized you with water, but he [Jesus] will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Luke 3:16 – John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

John 1:33 – I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

Jesus’ last words while He was on earth are found in Luke 24:49 and Acts 1:4. In Luke 24:49, Jesus says, “And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

Acts 1:4-5 reads “And while staying with them he [Jesus] ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Jesus’s great desire is for you and me to have all three baptisms. Do you have one, two, or three? Ask for any of the three that you need and want. God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are faithful to answer when you call.

With love and prayers,
Pastor Sherry C.
