Hopkins County Judge Robert Newsom issued a Declaration of Local Disaster for Public Health Emergency for Hopkins County in response to COVID-19 yesterday.

The county recommends that all gatherings should adhere to current CDC recommendations and guidelines. Organizers are to cancel or postpone any in-person social events that expect a gathering of more than ten people.

This does not apply to normal operation of businesses such as restaurants or retail unless it’s regarding a party or large gathering at the business. Newsom clarified today that the declaration limiting gatherings does apply to funerals.

Judge Newsom is still encouraging social distancing(keeping 6-10 feet apart from other individuals) from individuals and businesses to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Restaurants can encourage safe habits by limiting occupancy and seating tables a safe distance apart.

There are still no local restrictions on businesses such as gyms, bowling alleys, movie theaters, or similar businesses.
