John 5:5-8

5 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” 7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.”

It’s easy, especially after being a certain way or being in a particular circumstance for a length of time, to start allowing those things to become your identity.  Jesus had to ask the invalid man in today’s scripture an obvious question, “Do you want to be healed?”  He did so to separate the man from his surroundings.  You see, there is the great paradox, in today’s text…The invalid man had to lay down on the inside to stand on the outside.  He had to lay down his 38 years of excuses on the inside to stand on the outside.  He had to lay down his blame of others on the inside to stand on the outside.  He had to lay down his pity of “I have no one” on the inside to stand on the outside.  He had to lay down his identity, which was his disability, on the inside to stand on the outside.  The truth of the matter is that the man wasn’t waiting on the miracle, the miracle was waiting on the man!  You also have a decision to make if you’ve allowed your life to make you a victim.  You can continue to identify with what happened to you or you can lay them down and do like what Jesus told the invalid and, “Get up!”  Your miracle is waiting on you. – Love and Blessings, Pastor Jeff
