Luke 21:1-4
1 Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, 2 and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. 3 And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. 4 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
In this scripture text, Jesus, makes a Kingdom statement on how God measures generosity. It’s not mentioned as to how this woman became poor or how she even became a widow, but knowing the culture of the time, her poverty in all likelihood stemmed from her being widowed. Even though it’s not mentioned how she got in this position, all of the people there probably knew. Her offering was not an emotional decision in the moment for her. She didn’t show up haphazardly and drop her last little bit of money in the collection. If it was all she had to live on, she decided well before she ever came into the room what she was going to give. Her decision to be generous is one that Jesus decides to monument, where people pitied her Jesus prioritized her. You see, this is not a parable or illustration given to bring clarity to a point in a message. This is an actual account of a real person acting in real faith. Jesus was using her obedience as an example of what true generosity really looked like. He used it as a teaching moment for His disciples. He made the point that generosity isn’t determined by the amount but by the what the act requires of the giver. The wealthy people in the crowd gave out of what they had left over while this widow gave out of faith and obedience. Her giving was sacrificial love, while the others gave a conscience easing tip. When you give, do you give generously? Not monetarily, but generously. Sometimes, it’s a sacrifice to give up a day off to help an elderly neighbor cleanup their yard. It’s generous because of the sacrifice of time and effort, not because it costs a lot. Where is the Lord asking you to work on your generosity? Is it in time spent with your family? Maybe it’s serving more in your church or community. Or, maybe it’s as simple as leaving a healthy tip for the server who waits on you that you can tell has had a bad day.
