John 6:29
Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”

If you were to randomly ask various Christians what they should be working on as a believer you would most likely hear something to the effect of going to church or sharing the Gospel. These things are all fine and good but there is break down somewhere because many of those same people fail to do those very things. The breakdown occurs because all of the things that the church should be ‘working on’ should be product of what they believe not simply tasks that are required of everyone who professes to follow Christ. Jesus said that the work of God should be establishing and strengthening your belief in Him, not living up to the requirements of someone that you don’t really know. When you are well established in your relationship with Him the good works will naturally flow from that. In other words, the main focus of you time and energy should be growing your faith through spending time communicating with Him in prayer and His Word. Your belief system, or root system, based upon your relationship with Him, is what grounds and nourishes your life in Christ. When that relationship is healthy and prioritized properly you will start operating from it as opposed to working for it. You could never over emphasize the importance of deepening your roots into who He is. Your life, when it’s grounded in His love for you, will flourish and naturally begin to be about the things of the Kingdom. – Love and Blessings, Pastor Jeff
