13 The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. 14 And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria…
When you read today’s text, it’s easy to skim over it and just assume that the writer was simply informing you of the rivers with weird names that were near the garden of Eden. When you dig a little deeper however, you’ll see that the meanings of these rivers’ names reveal some very important truths. When you learn that Gihon is translated ‘bursting forth’ and Tigris is translated ‘rapid’, you start to see the picture that the Lord is trying to paint in your mind. The rivers that flowed out of Eden were all fed by a singular river that is not given a name or origin. Because of this you must assume that it’s origin is the Lord Himself. Now, if you’ll apply the meanings of those rivers to where they come from, you’ll see that the Holy Spirit is wanting to burst forth into your life in a rapid or powerful fashion. Enough fast flowing water is powerful enough to overtake any wall or stronghold that life or the enemy might try to put in place to block the movement of God in your life. God isn’t content with you simply receiving a small trickle of Himself, rather He’s looking to burst forth on your scene with His power and complete destroy those things that are hindering your life in Him. What areas of you life are in need of a breakthrough? Bring them before Him and ask Him to wash them in the powerful flow of His Holy Spirit. As those strongholds in your life come crashing down you will experience the freedom that comes and He will use you to bring that same freedom to others. – Love and Blessings, Pastor Jeff
