Sulphur Springs City Council Approves Renaming a Portion of Jackson Street After Sulphur Springs’ First African-American Mayor J.D. Franklin

A portion of Jackson Street in Sulphur Springs from MLK Jr. Drive to College Street will be renamed after the first African-American mayor of Sulphur Springs, J.D. Franklin.  Sulphur Springs City Council unanimously approved the change at last night’s council meeting.

Councilman Freddie Taylor said the idea to honor Franklin came from local pastor Jason Lindley. Lindley wanted to honor Franklin while he is still living.

Franklin was born in 1937 and graduated from Douglas High School in 1958. Mr. Franklin and his wife Gloria have five children. All of their children attended and graduated college. He served on the Sulphur Springs City Commission from 1975-1979. He has been active in Morning Chapel Missionary Baptist Church for 55 years. And he recently came out of retirement and is working at SSISD.
