Luke 15: 28-29
28 But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, 29 but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends.
If you’ve been involved with church for an extended period of time you have no doubt experienced some sort of hurt. It may have come at the hands of a leader or maybe someone was given an opportunity to serve that you thought you deserved. What you must understand is that how you serve is always secondary to whom you serve. The fact an opportunity or position didn’t open for you doesn’t diminish your position or value as a son. You must understand that it is ultimately on God as to when, where, or how you serve. It is easy to allow a spirit of religion to infiltrate your mind and make you feel like your longevity and work make you more or less qualified than someone else to serve. The Father in today’s text still had the same love for the son who never left even though He was celebrating the one who had returned. In fact, that son had unrestricted access to everything the Father had, he simply hadn’t taken advantage of it. Take a look at your relationship with your Father. Does it feel more like slavery than sonship? If so, make sure you’re spending enough time with Him outside of the church building. He sees and loves you beyond your capacity to serve and His priority is the condition of your heart not the strength of your hands. – Love and Blessings, Pastor Jeff
