Landon Thornton, a senior at Sulphur Springs High School, filed yesterday for Place 6 in the upcoming Sulphur Springs City Council election.
Thornton told FrontPorchNewsTexas.com that he wants the younger generation to have a voice in city issues. He believes he would rely on existing council members’ experience should he be elected.
He also told us that he plans on UT-Tyler in the fall but will be in Sulphur Springs on weekends should he win and that he would maintain his parents’ address in Sulphur Springs as his mailing address. We are currently determining if Thornton would meet residency requirements for city council should he win the election and attend UT-Tyler as planned.
Incumbent Doug Moore is the only other candidate to file for Place 6 thus far. Moore was appointed to replace Dan Froneberger who resigned the seat in 2017. The 2019 election for Place 6 is to determine who will fulfill the remaining year on the term. Place 6 will be on the 2020 ballot for a full 3 year term.
