YOUR TEXAS AGRICULTURE MINUTE: Farmers, ranchers focus on Texas Legislature Presented by Texas Farm Bureau’s Mike Miesse

The calendar says it’s an odd-numbered year. That means the Texas Legislature has convened in Austin for a 140-day session.

There is a lot on their plate, and it affects all of us. We’ve been promised an upgrade in education, which certainly deserves attention. Property taxes have been steadily rising, and tax payers are clamoring for relief.

This session, perhaps more than any other in recent memory, has a chance to make Texas the property rights state it currently only pretends to be.

Let’s all keep one thing in mind. Serving in the Legislature is a tough job. It’s not reasonable to expect 150 House members and 31 state senators to have all the answers.

There is no good government without citizen participation. Contact your state legislators frequently. Evaluate them on social media. Doing so respectfully works best.

The session is on. Expectations are high, and we are all in this together.
