The Texas Panhandle is particularly susceptible to wildfire. In the record-breaking fires of 2017, thousands of acres of grass, structures, many animals and even human lives were lost.

We are in the fire season again, and there have been fires. So far, these are not like last year, but they are bad enough.

In the Panhandle, a unique set of circumstances can easily produce an inferno. Winter moisture often yields an abundant crop of grass that is a nearly perfect fuel. The March and April high winds can drive a wall of flame that consumes all in its path.

There are other places in Texas where wildfires can rage out of control. They can be very hard to contain.

We can’t do anything about some ignition sources. Power lines can spark and lighting can touch of a conflagration.

But many fires start with carelessness—a cigarette thrown from a passing car, burning trash outdoors with acres of dried grass nearby. These we can do something about.
