Sulphur Springs High School Hires Spencer Emmert as New Head Band Director

SSISD School Board approved the hire of Spencer Emmert as the new Head Band Director for SSHS at Monday night’s board meeting. Emmert is currently the Head Band Director at Winnsboro ISD and was formerly the head director at Sulphur Springs Middle School. His bio from the Winnsboro ISD website is below:

Spencer Emmert is entering his second year as the head director at Winnsboro ISD.  He is responsible for directing the WHS Marching and Concert Bands and also teaches at Memorial Middle School.   Mr. Emmert previously spent 12 years as a director at Sulphur Springs ISD.  He became the head director at Sulphur Springs MS in 2007 and also had extensive involvement at Sulphur Springs HS.  Mr. Emmert holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Henderson State University.  While at Henderson, Mr. Emmert was named Outstanding Performer his Sophomore and Junior Years by the Ellis College of Arts & Sciences.  His teaching influences include Dr. Rick Dimond, Dr. Robert Houston and Mr. Doug DeMorrow.
The 2014-2015 school year saw the Winnsboro HS band acheive just the 5th sweepstakes in school history and had an incredibly successful year!
At SSMS, Mr. Emmert led the program, directed the Honors Band, assisted the Symphonic and Concert Bands, taught beginning percussion and horn classes, and coordinated all percussion activities for the middle school and 4A Sulphur Springs HS, including arranging several Fall UIL competition marching band shows for SSHS.

Under his direction, the SSMS Band program grew to over 280 students grades 6-8.  the SSMS Honors Band was a consistent sweepstakes award winner at UIL competition and invitational festivals consistently performing grade 3 literature at contest.  The SSMS Honors Band also entered the TMEA Honor Band process for the first time in school history and represented SSMS well at Area listening at Highland Park HS.  Also under Mr. Emmert’s direction, the SSHS drumline was awarded numerous Outstanding Percussion Awards at various invitational marching contests, the HS percussion ensemble was awarded consistent first division ratings at TSSEC in Austin and has been awarded the Outstanding Soloist Award at the state level.

Mr. Emmert is married to Christi who teaches Elementary Music in Sulphur Springs.  They have three sons Brody, Mitchell, and Chip.

Mr. Emmert’s professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Association of Texas Small School Bands and the Percussive Arts Society.  Mr. Emmert has also served as TMEA Region 4 MS Band Coordinator.
