Despite the freezing temperature, the January Northeast Texas Beef Improvement Organization’s (NETBIO) Pre-Conditioned Calf and Yearling Sale held Wednesday at the Sulphur Springs Livestock Commission attracted a good crowd of buyers, sellers and visitors — and a lot of good cattle.
Consigners shipped 5,387 head of calves and yearlings to the sale, and 27 buyers of those cattle paid an average of $859.46 per head.
“The cattle held up very good through the cold weather — mainly because they were all pre-conditioned and in excellent health,” said David Fowler, co-owner of the livestock commission.   He said there was a lot of Internet bidding and buying going on.
“About 1,500 head of cattle were sold over the Internet,” Fowler said.“ He also said there were  a number of buyers on hand purchasing cattle to ship to feed yards in the Texas Panhandle, Kansas, and to Minnesota.”
“The buyers who come to the NETBIO sales look for quality cattle, and it was again evident that our producers are doing a great job of pre-conditioning and getting their cattle ready for this sale,” Fowler said.
The next sale will be the newest date on the NETBIO schedule — slated for February 21 at 1 p.m. at the Sulphur Springs Livestock Commission. The weaning date was Jan. 7 for calves entered in that sale, and the booster shot deadline is Jan. 22
NETBIO members can also be preparing for a sale on March 21.  The weaning deadline for calves consigned in March is Feb. 4. The last date for booster shots for that sale is Feb. 19.
The NETBIO Pre-Conditioned Stocker and Feeder Calf Sale gives producers a market to offer their pre-conditioned calves and yearlings in load lot quantities. NETBIO holds seven pre-conditioned calf sales per year, which is the marketing arm for members of the organization.
