Another Thanksgiving come and gone. Who would have guessed that I over ate at all three of the Thanksgiving meals that I had? The Sunday before the holiday my mother’s side of the family had their traditional meal at Brashear Baptist Church Family Life Center. We had 92 in attendance but did miss a few of our cousins that were unable to make it. I also had a great meal at work on Wednesday and then cooked a large spread of food for my family on Thanksgiving Day. Needless to say I’m ready to take a break from cooking and eat out a few meals! I hope everyone out there had as good of a Thanksgiving as I did!
Since my last writing quite a bit has gone on in Miller Grove. The Fall Carnival at the school went very well. We ran out of chili about half way and by the end of the night we were pretty much out of stew. The Garrett brothers (Bret & Mark) teamed up and make a good chicken stew that day. Despite the carnival being on a Thursday night the PTO still made over $6000. I never did hear how much the combined total that the each of the PK-12th grade classes made from that night but I’m sure they did well. A word of thanks to all of the folks that came out that night. It was good to see so many friends and family during the chaos that night but proud our school had lots of support.
MG’s athletic department has been excelling in Cross Country and Volleyball this fall. The Lady Hornets volleyball team earned the title of Regional Quarter-Final Champs after their win against Leverett’s Chapel. The Regional Semi-Finals took place in Fort Worth with the girls winning a Friday night game against Spurger. Saturday, however, was a different story. The ladies played Trinidad and held their own until the last set, ending the final game with the score in favor of the opponent. Even though we didn’t get the honor of winning state, our girls did a great job and we should be proud of each of them for their hard work. Team members include Jaylah Roberson, Lauren Bullard, Alexa Pelerose, Harli Watson, Katie Williams, Alexis Green, Alexis Serrano, Cara Ford, Rosa Schones and Demi Weatherford. Demi, being a senior, will be the only one of this great team to graduate in May so I look forward to making it this far again next year with these talented young ladies.
Another win for the Hornets was during Cross Country season. Our boys’ team came home with 1st in state honors and the girls were slated as 2nd in state. Individually, Jorja Bessonett, gained the title of 1st in state with her 12:01 run at the state cross country meet in Roundrock. Not too bad for our 1A school, I must say! I’m also proud to say that these guys and girls were recognized by Judge Robert Newsome on Nov. 13 with a proclamation that was presented on the courthouse steps.
Veteran’s Day is another time our students displayed their community involvement. They had their annual Veteran’s breakfast for the community. The breakfast was organized by the MGHS National Honor Society and the Junior High Student Council. From what I could tell there was a good turn-out for the morning meal and short program that followed.
Please remember to keep the family of Junior Potts in your prayers after his recent passing. We also need to lift up Sonia Earp’s mother, Johnny Ferguson, Stephanie Bullard, and my niece Savanna Darrow. My niece has had her tonsils removed and is much better but still not back to her full strength.
I’m proud to see that Spencer and Dianne (Sparks) Wicks have their metal house up and starting to move things in. I know they are proud to have it near completion. As you drive around the community you can see several new houses and several plots of land that have changed hands in the last few months.
Miller Grove PTO will be sponsoring a chili cook-off during our annual basketball tournament that will be held Saturday, Dec. 2, in the high school gym. To enter there is a $25 fee with a chance to win $125! The prize amounts are $125 for first place, $75 for second place, and $50 for third place. The chili entries will be judged around 11:15 am that day and all entries are due no later than 11:00 am. After the judging, all-you-can-eat tickets will be sold for $10 per adult and $5 per child. Also, be sure to label your crock pot with your name on the bottom. For more information please contact Sonia Earp or Stacie Wilbur. This particular fundraiser will go toward the purchase of state rings for our Cross Country students.
