I saw a news story last week reporting that seven percent of American adults surveyed believe chocolate milk comes from brown cows. I was at first astonished. That’s more than 15 million Americans.

Upon reflection, my response is—why should they know different?

For the record, all milk from all colors of cows is white and from my viewpoint, very good. Add chocolate, maybe sugar and presto—chocolate milk.

Some Americans are four generations removed from the farm. They are bombarded with thousands of messages daily. How can they be expected to sort out information about food?

Food choices are personal. Yet, what will we be deciding today that’s more important?

Whose responsibility is that? I believe it ultimately rests with farm and ranch families to talk with the people who eat what they grow.

Generations who have lost touch with the farm are intensely interested in food and farmers. The toolbox is full of ways to tell the story.

How will they know if we don’t tell them?
