Governor Greg Abbott signed the bill making texting while driving illegal today. Texas becomes one of at least 47 other states that have similar laws. The law will take effect September 1st. The citation will carry a fine of up to $99 for first-time offenders and $200 for repeat offenses. 20% of crashes in Texas are said to be caused by distracted driving.
