Yantis High School Announces Top Grads
and Introduces Class of 2009

Yantis ISD announced their top graduates from the Class of 2009, this week. Class valedictorian is Cory Ward, son of Cinda Calvert and Michael Spradley. He has participated in both sports and excelled in academics. He is a four year member of the Owl Golf-Team, advancing to regional, both his junior and senior year. In UIL competition, he has excelled in both math and science sections. He won the physics UIL title at State Competition his junior year and is advancing to state competition this year in physics, as well. His excellence in math has earned him entrance to MIT, where he has received a $48,000.00 MIT Scholarship that will eventually be accelerated to over $190,000. by his senior year in college. Cory's future plans include working toward a doctorates degree in mathematics, after completing undergraduate work at MIT. This summer he will participate in a NASA Aerospace Scholar program.
Class salutatorian is Amanda McKinney, the daughter of Carmelita McKinney and the late Ronald McKinney. She has been active all four years of high school in athletics and academics, being a member of the Lady Owl Basketball Team for four years. Amanda has been accepted to Baylor University, but plans to continue her education at the University of Texas at Tyler, where she will major in chemistry and minor in music. She hopes to become a pharmacist and possibly teach piano, as she pursues her career.
