2nd Fatality Wreck on Hwy-11 East
Closes Roadway, Wednesday Morning

For the second time in two days, State Hwy-11 East, has been closed due to a major fatality wreck. Wednesday morning's accident occurred east of Pickton, and the Harmony Church, at a location east of HCR-2391. The accident occurred shortly after 9:00 a.m. The "head-on" collision involved a white Scion traveling in the east-bound lane, and a red Dodge 1-ton truck, pulling a trailer and loaded with a tractor, traveling in the west-bound lane of Hwy-11. Reports from those near the scene had observed the driver of the Scion weaving in the roadway, and the vehicle veered into the pathway of the truck, with the impact knocking the two vehicles into ditches on opposite sides of the highway.

Driver of the Scion, 74 year old, Melvin Bell of Sulphur Springs, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Yvonne King. The driver and a passenger in the truck were taken by ambulance to the hospital, but not thought to be life threatening. King ordered an autopsy to determine if the accident occurred due to a medical condition that Mr. Bell suffered from.

Driver of the one-ton truck was Gambino Cervantes, of Pickton, who was driving slowly, as he was delivering the tractor to a farm where he was employed.

With the holiday season and people thinking about other things, it is imperative that we continue to stay focused on our driving habits and drive safely, being alert to others and practicing caution, as we travel the roadways!
