Stolen hay found in a yard in Sulphur Springs.

"Case of the Stolen Hay" Solved

The Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce attempted to decorate Buford Park entrances to the 39th Annual World Champion Stew Contest, this past Saturday. Bales of hay, fall decor, pumpkins, and balloons were placed at entrances, at the trolley stop, and throughout the grounds, with the intent of making the event even more special.

Well, following Saturday's event, members of the Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce Board and volunteers spend endless hours cleaning up the stew grounds, taking down decorations, and returning decorations they had brought from home and borrowed. While the decorations were being taken down, one lady attempted to take a scarecrow and pumpkin from where the decorations were being assembled for loading, and had to be "run down" to get them back.

Then, workers waded mud and moved 25 bales of hay that had been obtained from the Downtown Business Alliance to a convenient location for pick-up, near Kids Kingdom in Buford Park. When the DBA came to pick the hay up, to be used to decorate downtown Sulphur Springs, there was no hay! Some calls on Monday morning revealed that someone had taken the twenty-five bales of hay. Who would take twenty-five bales of wet hay, that was only good for decorating?

Well, at least part of the hay has been located in a yard in Sulphur Springs! The hay was found with the ribbons from the balloons still attached, sitting beside the street in the yard!

Folks, sometimes you wonder why volunteers in Hopkins County are so hard pressed "into action." But, it's the actions of a few, who tend to mar events and make volunteers wonder why they even bother to make things nice for everyone?

Certainly volunteers can't let a single incident prevent them from the many, many good deeds that are done throughout the year. However, the joy of working tirelessly in this community is somehow diminished, when one is tired and worn-out from their efforts, and an insensitive act like this happens!

All one can say is, "Let's hope the parties responsible for stealing the hay needed it worse than the businesses downtown Sulphur Springs did!"
