Steer Validation Conducted Tuesday
For Hopkins Co. Market Show

"It's hard to believe that it's time to start the long journey toward the Hopkins County Market Show," advised Murphy Howle, Steer Superintendent of the Show, on Tuesday afternoon. "We begin the process with the validation and tagging of all the steers that will be entered in the show!"

Tuesday afternoon, at Dairy Health Services Veterinary Clinic, on Hwy 11, youth from across Hopkins County brought their steer projects to the clinic to have a tag placed in their ear and a tattoo, designating that they are entered in the show. Students had to have the steer purchased and ready to go on feed by Tuesday's entry deadline.

The 2010 Hopkins County Market Show is slated for February 25, 26, & 27th, 2010. Students will feed and halter break their steers during the enterim and attempt to put as much gain and muscle on the steer, as possible, for the "eye of the judge."

Murphy Howle, Steer Superintendent of the Hopkins County Market Show, tags another
entry in the show, on Tuesday afternoon, when 39 steers were tagged-in for the market.

"It's a great project and teaches responsiblility to the youth," advised Hopkins County 4-H Agent Juli Hutchins. "Yes, the student becomes very attached to their steer, when they are required to go out on a daily basis and feed, water, and groom the animal. But, they also gain experience in marketing and meeting the public, as they go through the show and sale part of the program. It's a great learning experience for the student!"

Thirty-nine steers were tagged on Tuesday, for the upcoming Market Show, and students all across the county will be making their best effort to have them ready and groomed to perfection for the show.

The steer project is the longest project that the students undertake for the local show. Lamb, market goat, and swine projects will be validated and tagged in upcoming days, and the poultry projects will begin soon after Christmas. So, any opportunity that you get, encourage the youth and ask them about their projects for the 2010 Hopkins County Market Show!!!
