State Fair of Texas Offers Familiar
As Well As New Experiences
by: Bobby McDonald

Most people in Hopkins County have enjoyed a day at the State Fair of Texas. This year's version began on September 25th and will continue through October 18th, with livestock shows, concerts, midway rides, household arts exhibits, new automobiles, and the familiar taste of saltwater taffy and a Fletcher's Corny Dog. Those are just part of the experience of going to the State Fair of Texas, in Dallas.

This year's new "fried butter" is being touted as a new experience, but I much prefer the traditional and tasty Fletcher's Corny Dog, slathered with mustard. Others might want a turkey leg or a sausage on a stick!

And, when I was in high school and junior high, somehow, The Midway, was much more appealing to me, than it is today, with its wide selection of rides and games of chance. Today, I'm much more inclined to enjoy the exhibits of household art, new automobiles, and other products.

Then, it's a special treat to go to the livestock barns, know some of the youth that are showing their animals and "yell for them from the stands!" You can actually sit down, while you support them, and make a "rest stop" from all the walking. Has the fair grounds gotten bigger, since high school?

The State Fair of Texas continues to offer something for everyone. Regardless of your taste, age, or spectrum of interest, theirs something for the entire family at the State Fair of Texas, from the Texas Food and Fiber Building, chocked full of Texas products and their recipes, to handmade quilts, beautiful oil paintings, and even a "card playing cowboy and his saloon girl, made out of butter!"
Just for the sake of nostalgia, you should make plans to attend this year's version of the State Fair of Texas, and check with the local County Extension Agent's Office, or one of the Vocational Agriculture Departments in Hopkins County and find out when the youth of this county will be exhibiting their projects. You're sure to have an enjoyable day, of pleasant memories....eating corny dogs, cotton candy, and chewing on salt water taffy, as you make the trip home. Who knows, you might even win one of those giant teddy bears, and really make a "haul" at the Midway?

If per chance you don't make it to Dallas for the 2009 State Fair of Texas, enjoy the accompanying photos and the video footage, that we've prepared for you!!!!
