

PJC Offers Small Business
Training in October
From PJC
The Small Business Development Center at Paris Junior College will
hold a selection of workshops, seminars, training sessions, and free
small business counseling for the Paris area during the month of
October, according to Director Pat Bell.
Live the Dream! will be offered from 9-11 a.m. on Friday, October 1.
This free workshop will include information needed to start a small
business. Topics will include legal requirements of starting a
business including the different forms of business organization and
their advantages and disadvantages, conducting a feasibility study,
writing a business plan, types of financing available for a start-up
businesses and what lenders want to know, as well as information on
SBA guaranteed loan programs, and getting a sales tax permit.
Selling to the Government Using the General Services Administration
(GSA) will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5. This
workshop will help determine if a Schedule contract is right for a
company, why the Schedules exist, whether now is the right time to
pursue this, and how to prepare an offer that saves money and wins the
contract.
Social Networking for Business will meet from 10 a.m. to noon on
Thursday, Oct. 7. Participants will learn how to use social networking
sites for their business, how to create a social media plan, how to
measure the effectiveness of a social media program, how to target
opportunities for advertising, ways to improve a network with social
software, and marketing tips for the aspiring online entrepreneur.
Create a business Facebook page or improve existing pages in this
hands-on workshop.

The Central Contractor Registration (CCR) workshop will be presented
from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19. This workshop will
show how to complete the CCR registration and obtain at a minimum a
confirmation number. CCR is the primary vendors' database for the US
government. Both current and potential federal government vendors are
required to register in CCR in order to be awarded contracts by the
federal government. Pre-registration is required for limited class
seating. Participants must bring their DUNS number, bank information
(ACH, account number, phone number) and TIN (Tax Payer Identification
number), SSN or EIN. For anyone not having obtained a DUNS number,
call 1-866-705-5711 and obtain this number before the workshop.
The Beginning QuickBooks course will meet from 8 a.m. to noon each
Tuesday and Friday, Oct. 26 through Nov. 5. Information for learning
to use this popular business accounting program for a small business
will include setting up a chart of accounts; reconciling a checking
account; creating and printing invoices, receipts, and statements;
tracking payables, inventory, and receivables; creating estimates; and
generating reports. QuickBooks software can be used to process payroll
quickly and easily. This course details all the steps needed for
proper setup and includes troubleshooting tips and solutions for
common problems and mistakes. Pre-requisites for this course are
computer experience and basic accounting knowledge.
The Patent, Trademark and Copyright workshop will be held from 10 a.m.
to noon on Friday, Oct. 29. Participants will learn how to register a
copyright, select and register a trademark, and how to evaluate
creative products for patent protection. Other topics will cover
patent, copyright and trademark resources on the Internet as well as
how to avoid infringements when using the Internet.
Free counseling to start or expand a small business is offered by
appointment, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through
Friday, at the Small Business Development Center in the Gabbert
Building on the Paris Junior College campus.
