Silk-Tie Easter Eggs

by: Bobby McDonald

Are you looking for a way to dye Easter eggs without all the mess of dyes all over your kitchen? Without all those spills and clean-ups on the kitchen counter, by the kids as they attempt to paint and dye the eggs?

Well, we heard about a method of dying eggs that sounded great and decided to try it. It uses common things around the house and is a rather inexpensive method, without all the mess!

Materials Needed

One Dozen raw eggs

A pot to boil the eggs in, on the stove

Old Silk Ties, or an old silk blouse or boxers that
are 100% Silk ( the old ties can be purchased at
GoodWill for only 50 cents each, if you don't have
them on-hand)

An old pillowcase, bedsheet, or tablecloth, made
of white cotton

Twist Ties

3 Tablespoons of White Vinegar

Water

Vegetable Oil (If desired)

Tongs or A Large Spoon

Method

1.) Cut silk into squares large enough to wrap around each raw egg.

2.) Wrap the raw eggs with the piece of silk, making sure that the print side of the
cloth is facing the egg. It doesn't have to fit perfectly, but needs to wrap around
the entire egg for best results.

3.) Wrap the silk wrapped egg with a piece of the white cotton and secure tightly
with twist ties.

4.) Place the wrapped eggs in pot and fill the pot with water to cover the eggs completely.
Add three tablespoons of White Vinegar.

5.) Bring water to a boil, turn the heat down and simmer for 30 minutes.

6.) Remove eggs from water with tongs or a large spoon and let cool.

7.) Remove the Silk and Cotton wrappings from the eggs, once cooled.

8.) For shiny eggs, you can wipe them with vegetable oil.

9) Enjoy the brightly decorated eggs in the patterns of the silk that you
used.

This method is simple enough that children can participate in the process, with you making certain that an adult handles the boiling water and removes the hot eggs from the pan, and there is no mess from all the dyes to stain your kitchen counters and clothes!
