Johanna Hicks, instructor, demonstrates some of the skills in learning to sew, to one of
her students.

It's basic sewing skills, an art that seems almost extinct, that are being taught at this week's Sewing School, offered by the Texas Agri-Life Extension Service. "Sewing is something that many of my participants in class have learned is fun!" exclaimed Johanna Hicks, as she taught this year's session. "Students learn the basic skills of sewing and machine operation and then are challenged with a number of practical applications!"

Students are taught the skills of fabric selection, patterns, and then given projects such as pillows, placemats, mitts, and other practical applications to make, as part of the class. "These are basic things that can be used around the home, and prepares the student for more difficult projects, using the same basic skills," denoted Hicks. "Many of my students quickly learn of the money savings involved, when you learn to make your own clothing or that for your children!"

"Sewing, is an art and allows you to be creative and handmake items that are both unique and functional," allowed Hicks. "It's really a fun school and provides the students with skills that they can apply to a world of opportunities, from making simple curtains, household items, and other home projects, to creating an advance project of possilby a clothing ensemble!"

Hicks is instructing the class, this week, and had a number of eager students, participating in th exercise.
