Press Release from Sen. Cornyn's Office

WASHINGTON—The Sulphur Springs Independent School District Police Department has been awarded a federal grant of $454,103 to enhance school safety, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn announced Monday. The funding comes through the Secure Our Schools program under the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS).

“Ensuring that our students are able to learn in a safe environment is vital, and COPS is playing an important role in helping keep our schools and communities safe,” Sen. Cornyn said. “This funding will support the education of the young people in the Sulphur Springs Independent School District by helping to ensure a safe school environment.”

The funding can be used to purchase metal detectors, locks, lighting, and other deterrent measures, to perform security assessments, to train security personnel and students, or to coordinate with local law enforcement, as well as other measures that may provide a significant improvement in school security.

Sen. Cornyn serves on the Finance, Judiciary, Agriculture and Budget Committees.  He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee’s Immigration, Refugees and Border Security subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice, and Bexar County District Judge.
