Songwriters to Compete for Cash Prizes in First Annual Ruby Allmond Songwriting Contest This Summer in Bonham

This summer, dozens of songwriters will be competing for cash prizes, a studio recording session and airtime on area radio stations in a contest named after the late Ruby Allmond.

A native of Bailey, Texas, Ruby built a regional reputation as a talented musician, singer and songwriter that culminated when legendary Texas songwriter Cindy Walker introduced Ruby to the Nashville music scene and the artists at RCA Records. As a result, one of country music’s most influential singers, Dottie West, would go on to have a top-20 hit in 1968 with “Reno,” one of many songs written by Ruby Allmond.

The highlight of this inaugural Ruby Allmond Songwriting Contest will be a performance by the finalists in Bonham, Texas August 7 before the judges and an audience.

This contest is presented by the Special Collections Dept. of the James E. Gee Library, Texas A&M University-Commerce with a first place prize of $300. Second place will earn $200 and the third place winner will receive $100.

The winner of the 2010 Ruby Allmond songwriting contest will also have a chance to record his or her original song at a studio in Commerce, Texas.

Contestants are required to fill out an entry form and then submit a CD with no more than two original songs, along with two copies of the lyrics. Entries must be postmarked no later than July 1, 2010.

Judges will select the 10 finalists who must then perform their song for the judges and an audience Saturday, August 7 at Bailey Inglish Auditorium in Bonham where the winner of the inaugural Ruby Allmond Songwriting Contest will be announced. The entry form and rules are included at the bottom of this article or you may visit www.rubyallmond.com for more information.
