Lights Shine in Honor of Cancer Survivors and Remembrance of Those Lost
Press Release From
Relay For Life
A special luminaria ceremony during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Hopkins County remembers those lost to cancer and honors those who have battled and won. The luminaria candle lighting to represent these individuals is on May 1 at 10 pm at the Sulphur Springs Middle School Track.
Anyone desiring to purchase a luminaria may do so by contacting Mynder Kelly at 903-348-3783. Each luminaria candle is $5.
“It will be beautiful when all the bags with candles are illuminated around the track,” said Mynder Kelly, luminaria chair. “We hope to sell enough to light the entire area. And this year we are doing things a little differently. Our Relay teams have decided to go the second mile by having a canned food drive. Luminaria sacks are typically weighted down with sand but this year the bags will be weighted down by cans of food. After the Relay on May 1-2 the cans of food will be donated to the North East Texas Food Bank.”

Those who would like to contribute canned goods for this event may do so by bringing their donation to Relay meetings. Relay meetings will be held at First United Methodist Church on Thursday, April 2 (5:30-7:00 pm), Tuesday, April 14 (6:00-7:30 pm), and Thursday, April 16 (5:30-7:00 pm).
Hopkins County cancer survivors will kick off the Relay For Life on May 1 at 7:00 pm with the official survivors’ lap; then the rest of the participants will join the fun. Information about purchasing a luminaria is available by calling Mynder Kelly at 903-348-3783. Luminaria order forms are also available at Wal-Mart (dressing room service desk).
