Hopkins County Politics "Heat-Up"
As Hopefuls Sign-Up For Races, Thursday
by: Bobby McDonald
Local Democratic Party members shared "strategy" at Thursday's meeting.
You had to get up early and had to "scramble" to cover all of the filings, on Thursday morning, as it was the first official opportunity for local candidates to file their intent to seek public office. The local Democratic hopefuls met at an 8:00 breakfast at Pizza Inn and local Republicans chose to meet at ReMax Real Estate office.
On the Democratic ticket, filing for office were, County Commissioner Precinct #4, Danny Evans, incumbent; two individuals, filing for the County Commissioner Precinct #2, Heath Gammill of Martin Springs and Mike Odell of Como; County Court at Law Judge, Amy Smith, incumbent; County Treasurer, Treva Watson, incumbernt; County Judge Cletis Millsap, incumbent; Justice of the Peace Precinct #1 and #2, Ronny Glossup and Yvonne King, incumbents; and County Clerk, Debbie Shirley, incumbent.
Donnie Wisenbaker, left, Hopkins County Republican Party Chair, shakes hands with John
Cooper, Trey Hinton, and Erwin Cain, all filers in the local Republican Party, at Thursday
morning's official signing.
Meanwhile at the Republican Party conclave, "two-doors down," John Cooper, has thrown his hat in the race for Ralph Hall's state senate seat; Erwin Cain has made his desire known to run for the office of state representative, now occupied by Mark Homer; and Trey Hinton, of Reilly Springs, has announced his intentions to run for the office of Hopkins County Commissioner of Precinct #2.

Mike Odell, hopeful for the Hopkins County Commissioner Pct. #2, presents his paperwork
to District Clerk, Patricia Dorner.
As of 10:00 on Thursday morning, the only local race drawing multiple candidates was the County Commissioner Precinct #2 race. The seat is currently held by Burke Bullock, who had previously announced his intentions of not running for the office. The three candidates, Heath Gammill, Mike Odell, and Trey Hinton, will most certainly be canvassing the Precinct #2 area of Hopkins County, soliciting support.
Heath Gammill, left, hopeful for County Commissioner Pct. #2, and Treva Watson, incumbent
for Hopkins County Treasurer, wait in line to file their papers, for seeking office in local races.
Candidates in both parties have until January to file for the respective offices, with their party chairmen.
Hopkins County Justices of the Peace, Ronny Glossup and Yvonne King, both were at Thursday
morning's meeting, as they filed for re-election.
