PJC Announces Continuing Education
Classes For September

 

The Continuing Education Department at Paris Junior 
College will offer a wide selection of classes during the month of 
September, according to Dean Kevin Rose.
            

Child Care
             An eight hour pre-service training is required of all 
new employees in regulated child care facilities. This course is 
scheduled on an individual basis. Applicants must have a high school 
diploma or GED.
             The Child Development Associate course will meet from 
6-9 p.m., each Monday and Wednesday, Sept. 14 through Feb. 17, 2010. 
After successful completion of this course, the individual must 
complete a direct assessment package and request a verification site 
request. The CDA credential will be awarded upon completion of a 
successful site evaluation and exam.
            

Computer
             A Microsoft Office 2007 class will be offered in two 
time frames. Students may choose to attend from 1-4 p.m., Monday 
through Thursday, September 14-17, or a night class will be held from 
6-9 p.m., each Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 22 through Oct. 1. 
Students may select to learn Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint or 
Publisher at their own speed, in a computer lab with a skilled 
trainer at hand. This is an ideal way to progress at your own speed 
through the material in an area that interests you.
             Welcome to the World of Computers is scheduled from 
5:30-9 p.m., each Monday and Wednesday, Sept. 28-30. This class is 
designed for the person that has very limited, if any, computer 
training.
             Computing for Senior Adults (55+)  Classes held at 
PrimeTime location.
             Understanding Personal Computers meets from 9 a.m. to 
noon, Monday/Wednesday/Friday, Sept. 21-25. An alternate class is 
offered from 1-4 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 22-29. This 
class is designed for the novice and uses a hands-on approach to 
provide instruction to allow participants to take other computer 
classes.
             Understanding Windows will teach you to create, save and 
find your files, and open and close multiple documents without fear 
of losing them.  The class will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday/
Wednesday/Friday, Sept. 28 through Oct. 2.
            

 

Driver’s Education and Defensive Driving
             The Driver’s Education course is approved by the Texas 
Department of Public Safety and is open to students at least 15 years 
of age. A birth certificate, verification of enrollment and social 
security card must be provided. The class meets from 4-6 p.m., Monday 
through Thursday, Sept. 1-24.
             The Defensive Driving class is offered by Paris Junior 
College #067 in accordance with the standards established by the 
National Traffic Safety Institute of Texas, Inc. under license 
#C0297, and consists of six hours of classroom instruction. The class 
will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Sept. 14-15.
            

Health Care/Medical
             The Medication Aide Update course fulfills the annual 
renewal requirements for certified medication aides according to 
specifications of the Texas Department of Health. The class will be 
held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10. Certified Med Aides 
should take this class one month prior to the expiration of their card.
             A Basic and Clinical Phlebotomy class is scheduled from 
6-9 p.m., each Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 15 through Dec. 1.
             A Forensic Nursing Seminar will meet from 8 a.m. to noon 
on Thursday, Sept. 24. This class is designed to heighten the 
awareness of the RN role in responding to the bio-psycho-social care 
of all patients including those that are victims or suspects of 
violent crimes.
             The Basic Life Support (CPR) class is approved by the 
American Heart Association. The class meets from 5:30-9 p.m. on Sept. 
21-22.
             The Basic Life Support (CPR) recertification for health 
professionals will meet from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, Sept. 25. This 
class is an update and review for current CPR certified cardholders. 
Written examination and successful demonstration of skills required. 
The American Heart Association certifies this class.
            

Photography
             A Digital Photography class will be held from 6-9 p.m., 
each Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 29 through Oct. 6. This class will 
show you how your camera works, and then help you optimize your 
camera for your specific needs. Bring your own camera and instruction 
manual, if you have one.
            

Sign Language
             A Beginning Sign Language class will be held from 6-9 
p.m., each Monday, Sept. 21 through Nov. 30. This American Sign 
Language class will teach participants to fingerspell words using the 
ABC’s and learn words and phrases.
            

Ballroom Dancing
             A Ballroom Dancing class will meet from 7-8 p.m., each 
Tuesday, Sept. 29 through Oct. 20. This class will teach the Swing, 
Cha-Cha, Salsa and more.
            

Leadership
             An Essentials for Leadership class will be held from 9 
a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11. This foundation course teaches 
leaders how to get results through people while acquiring a set of 
proven interaction skills.
            

Kids Hurt Too
             The Kids Hurt Too seminar is designed to help parents 
understand the needs of their children throughout the process of 
divorce. The seminar will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, 
Sept. 12.

 


            

Small Business Development
             The How to Start Your Own Business seminar will be 
offered from 9-11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 4. Topics will include legal 
requirements, feasibility studies, forms of business ownership and 
their advantages and disadvantages, the business plan, finding the 
money, what lenders want to know, SBA loans, and other loan sources.
             Government Contracting will show you the basics of 
government contracting at the federal, state and local level. The 
seminar will meet from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Learn 
about regulations, uniform contract format, contract types, 
electronic commerce and more.
             The QuickBooks Point of Sale course explores a point of 
sale system that lets you know exactly what sells and lets you know 
precisely what you hold in inventory. This class meets from 8:30 a.m. 
to noon, each Friday, Sept. 25 through Oct. 2. QuickBooks Point of 
Sale is cost effective and offers solutions that are important to a 
retailer’s success for the full cycle of inventory steps including 
purchase orders, receiving of inventory, returns to vendors, sales 
orders, sales receipts, reporting, and more.
             A Workman’s Comp 101 workshop will be held from 8:30 
a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29. This workshop includes a 
comprehensive overview of the Texas Worker’s Compensation system and 
discussion of the Return-to-Work program. Danny Taylor of the Texas 
Worker’s Compensation Commission in Austin will serve as the instructor.
            

Welding
             An Advanced Gas Tungsten Arc Welding class is scheduled 
from 1-5 p.m., each Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 1 through Dec. 17. 
This course will cover advanced topics in GTAW welding, including 
welding in various positions and directions. No tool kit is required. 
Supplies are included in the cost.
