Countinuing Education Classes
For October

Paris Junior College’s Continuing Education Department
will provide a wide range of class offerings during the month of
October, according to John Spradling, Dean of Workforce Education.
Health Care/Medical
The Dental Assistant class will meet from 6-9:30 p.m.
each Tuesday and Thursday, October 1 through December 10. This class
prepares students for entry-level positions and familiarizes students
with all areas of pre-clinical dental assisting. In addition to entry-
level administrative jobs, this course is ideal for students
interested in pursuing a future formal dental hygienist program.
The Physical Therapy Technician class will be held from
6-9 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday, October 6 through December 3.
This class is designed to introduce students to the physical therapy
profession and to train them for an entry level position as a
physical therapy technician.
An ACLS Provider Renewal Course is scheduled from 8:30
a.m. to 5 p.m. on October 7. This is an update and review course for
current ACLS certified cardholders. Written examination and
successful demonstration of skills is required to successfully
complete this class.
The Pharmacy Technician class will be held from 6-9:30
p.m. each Monday and Wednesday, October 12 through December 2. This
comprehensive course prepares students to enter the pharmacy field
and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam.
The Nurse Aide class will meet from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
Monday through Thursday, October 12-28. This class offers preparation
for entry-level assistants to achieve a level of knowledge, skills,
and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long-
term care facilities.
The EKG Technician Certification class will be held from
6-9:30 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday, October 13 through December 3.
This comprehensive 50-hour certification program prepares students to
function as EKG technicians and to take the American Society of
Phlebotomy Technician (ASPT)-Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam
and other national certification exams.
An Advanced Disaster Life Support class is scheduled
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on October 16-17. This class is two full days
of classroom, tabletop scenarios, and hands-on operations-level
disaster response training. Pre-requisite: Basic Disaster Life
Support, and also recommend completion of ICS 100, 200, 300 and 400.
Contact hours issued by the AMA to qualified participants. CME
credits issued to PA’s and Physicians by the AMA.
The Basic Life Support (CPR) class, approved by the
American Heart Association, will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on
October 16. This class covers instruction in lifesaving skills of
respiratory (choking and near drowning) and cardiac emergencies
involving adults, children, and infants.
The ACLS Provider class will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 5
p.m. on October 20-21. This class is designed in accordance with
American Heart Association standards. Participants must be able to
demonstrate CPR skills during the course.
Basic Life Support (CPR) Recertification for Health
Professionals will be offered 5:30-9:30 p.m. on October 19. This
class is an update and review for current CPR certified cardholders.
Written examination and successful demonstration of skills is required.
Computer
A Microsoft Office 2007 class lets you learn any one of
the Office 2007 programs at your own pace. Students may choose Word,
Excel, Access, PowerPoint or Publisher. The class will be offered in
two time frames. A morning class will meet from 9 a.m. to noon,
Monday through Thursday, October 5-8. An evening session will be held
from 6-9 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday, October 13-22. Classroom
workbooks will be available for use during the class.
A Dreamweaver Web site design class will meet from 6-9
p.m. each Monday and Wednesday, October 12-21. This class will take
the student from learning all the basic functions to fully
understanding how to get Web sites up and running.
The Microsoft Excel 2007 Basic class will run from 6-9
p.m. each Monday and Wednesday, October 26 through November 4. This
is an electronic spreadsheet application used to perform numeric
calculations, graph data, develop reports, and much more.
The Microsoft Word 2007 Basic class will meet from 6-9
p.m. each Monday and Wednesday, October 12-21. This word processing
program makes it easy to create a variety of professional looking
documents from simple letters and memos to newsletter, blog posts,
business cards, resumes, flyers and more.
The Microsoft Publisher 2007 Basic class will be held
from 8 a.m. to noon, each Friday, October 16-30. Topics will include
use of templates, wizards and creating Desktop Publishing works
including business cards, greeting cards, postcards, calendars,
Christmas cards and much more.
Computing for Senior Adults (55+)
Understanding Windows teaches participants how to become
comfortable creating, saving, and finding files. The class meets at
PrimeTime from 1-4 p.m., each Tuesday and Thursday, October 1-8.
Surfin’ the Web gives an introduction to the Internet
including e-mail, home page, and how to perform basic research to
address company/business needs. The morning class will run from 9
a.m. to noon, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, October 5-9. An afternoon
class will be offered from 1-4 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday,
October 13-20. These classes meet at PrimeTime.
Driver’s Education/Defensive Driving
The Driver’s Education class is approved by the Texas
Department of Public Safety and is open to students at least 15 years
of age. A birth certificate, Verification of Enrollment (VOE) and
social security card must be provided. The class meets from 4-6 p.m.,
Monday through Thursday, October 5-29.
Defensive Driving is offered by Paris Junior College
#067 in accordance with standards established by the National Traffic
Safety Institute of Texas, Inc., under license #C0297, and consists
of six hours of classroom instruction. The class will meet from 6-9
p.m. on October 12-13.
Spanish
Spanish for Fun Part I will be held from 6-8 p.m., each
Monday, October 5 through November 23. This class offers practical
and functional use of Spanish in a very short period of time by
breaking the language down to basic components.

Leadership
The Leading Change course focuses on the crucial role
leaders have in effectively exploring change, introducing change, and
help others overcome resistance typically associated with change. The
class meets from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, October 2.
Small Business Development
Selling to the Government Using the General Services
Administration (GSA) is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday,
October 1. This workshop will show how to determine if a Schedule
Contract is right for your company, why the schedules exist, whether
now is the right time to pursue it, and how to prepare an offer that
will save money and win the contract. Actual contract applications
will be reviewed.
How to Start Your Own Business is a free seminar to
explore legal requirements for a small business, feasibility studies,
forms of business ownership and their advantages and disadvantages,
the business plan, finding the money, what lenders want to know, SBA
loans, and other loan sources, for someone wanting to start a
business. The seminar will be offered from 9-11 a.m. on Friday,
October 2.
The QuickBooks business accounting class meets from 8
a.m. to noon, each Tuesday and Friday, October 13-23. Participants
will learn to set up and maintain a chart of accounts, reconcile a
checking account, create and print invoices, receipts, and
statements, track payables, inventory, and receivables, create
estimates and generate reports.
A Patent, Trademark and Copyright Laws seminar will be
presented from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, October 23. Participants
will learn how to register a copyright, select and register a
trademark, and how to evaluate products for patent protection.
Know the Score to Breaking the Credit Barrier covers
understanding credit, the 3 C’s of credit, your credit history,
credit scores, improving your credit score, creating a money
management plan, tracking your money, and creating a contingency
plan. The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday,
October 27.
What’s So Important About Customer Service will be offer
employers and
employees tips and techniques for providing amazing customer service.
The seminar will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, October 29.
Childcare
Child Care Pre-Service training is required of all new
employees in regulated childcare facilities. The course is scheduled

Personal Enrichment
A Cake Decorating workshop will meet from 8 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. on Saturday, October 10. Students will learn the tools needed in
order to be successful with cake decorating. Theme cakes to be
created include a clown cake, floral spray and others. The fees for
this class include a cake decorating kit for the student to keep.
A Plein Aire Workshop will focus on strategies for
painting outdoors. Instruction will concentrate on how to make
successful paintings from nature’s simple raw materials – a clump of
trees, a hillside, the corner of a pond, or the edge of a field.
Guest artist Deborah Paris will hold this workshop from 8:30 a.m. to
4 p.m. on Friday, October 9. Space is limited so early registration
is suggested.
Attend the Event Planning Basics seminar and gain
personalized guidance in organizing meetings, weddings, corporate
events, fundraising galas, conferences, and other special events. The
seminar meets from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 24.
Kids Hurt Too
The Kids Hurt Too seminar is designed to help parents
understand the needs of their children throughout the process of
divorce. The seminar will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6.
Workforce Development
The Bridges Out of Poverty II workshop will be offered
from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 22. This workshop
introduces strategies for changing program designs, policies and
procedures. Scholarships are available by request for foster parents
or CPS workers.
An OSHA Construction Safety course meets from 9 a.m. to
3 p.m. on October 23-24. The required topics include: Introduction to
OSHA; OSHA Focus Four Hazards including fall protection, electrical,
struck by, caught in between; Personal Protective and Lifesaving
Equipment; and Health Hazards in Construction including Hazard
Communication and Silica. Elective topics include: Materials
Handling, Storage, Use and Disposal; Tools – Hand and Power;
Excavations; and Stairways and Ladders. Upson successful completion,
participants will receive a Department of Labor OSHA 10 hour
construction safety and health course completion card.
