PJC Announces Continuing Education
Courses for January 2010

Paris Junior College’s Continuing Education Department has 
scheduled a varied selection of classes for the month of January, 
according to Vice President of Workforce Education John Spradling.

            Small Business

            How to Start Your Own Business will meet from 9-11 a.m. on 
Friday, January 8. This free seminar covers legal requirements, 
feasibility studies, forms of business ownership and their advantages 
and disadvantages, the business plan, finding the money, what lenders 
want to know, SBA loans, and other loan sources.

            Government Contracting 101 offers the basics of government 
contracting at the federal, state and local level. This workshop will 
be presented from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, January 12.

            Childcare

            An eight-hour pre-service training is required of all new 
employees to work in regulated childcare facilities. Applicants must 
have a high school diploma or a GED. The course is scheduled on an 
individual basis. Call 903-782-0447 for information.

            Computer

            The Microsoft Office 2007 class will be offered in two 
time frames. A morning class will meet from 9 a.m. to noon each 
Friday, January 8-29. An evening class will run from 6-9 p.m., each 
Tuesday and Thursday, January 12-21. Participants can choose from 
Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint or Publisher programs and progress at 
their own speed with the help of a skilled trainer on hand. A minimum 
number of students is required for the course to be finalized so sign 
up early.

            An Adobe Dreamweaver class will be held from 6-9 p.m., 
each Tuesday and Thursday, January 26 through February 4. This class 
takes students from learning the basics functions to fully 
understanding how to get Web sites up and running.

            Computing for Senior Adults (55+)

            Understanding Personal Computers will meet at the 
PrimeTime location. A morning class will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, 
Monday/Wednesday/Friday, January 11-15. An afternoon class will meet 
from 1-4 p.m., each Tuesday and Thursday, January 12-19.

            Understanding Windows offers instruction in creating, 
saving, and finding files. This class also explains some of the 
Windows operating system accessories. The morning session runs from 9 
a.m. to noon, Monday/Wednesday/Friday, January 25-29. The afternoon 
class meets from 1-4 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday, January 26 
through February 2.

            Driver Education/Defensive Driving

            The Driver’s Education course is approved by the Texas 
Department of Public Safety and is open to students at least 15 years 
of age. A birth certificate, Verification of Enrollment and social 
security card must be provided. The class is held from 4-6 p.m., 
Monday through Thursday, January 4-28.

            Defensive Driving offered by Paris Junior College under 
provided #067 in accordance with the standards established by the 
National Traffic Safety Institute of Texas, Inc., license #C0297, 
consists of six hours of classroom instruction. The class will meet 
from 6-9 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, January 11-12. This class may be 
applied toward insurance discounts or, in some instances, for traffic 
ticket dismissal.

            Health Care/Medical

            A Nurse Aide class will meet from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday 
through Thursday, January 4-20. This class offers preparation for 
entry-level assistants to achieve knowledge and skills essential for 
basic care to residents of long-term care facilities.

An ACLS Provider Renewal Course for current certified cardholders will 
be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 13. Written 
examination and successful demonstration of skills is required to 
successfully complete this course.

The Basic Life Support (CPR) Recertification for Health Professionals 
will be offered from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, January 22. This is an 
update and review course for current CPR certified cardholders. 
Written examination and successful demonstration of skills is 
required. The American Heart Association certifies this course.

The Basic Life Support (CPR) class, approved by the American Heart 
Association, will be held from 5:30-9 p.m., on Monday and Tuesday, 
January 25-26. This class will instruct learners in the two-rescuer 
approach to the adult and child victim.

The ACLS Provider Course will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on 
Tuesday and Wednesday, January 26-27. This course is designed in 
accordance with American Heart Association standards.

Leadership Series

Coaching for Improvement builds the skills leaders need to help people 
with performance or work habit problems. The class meets from 9 a.m. 
to 5 p.m. on Friday, January 8. Registration deadline is one week 
prior to the class date.

Parenting

The Kids Hurt Too seminar will be presented from 9 a.m. to noon on 
Saturday, January 9. This seminar is designed to help parents 
understand the needs of their children throughout the process of 
divorce.

Personal Enrichment

A Country and Western Dance class will be offered from 6-8 p.m. each 
Tuesday, January 12-26. This class includes basic two-step, three-
step, double shuffle, Cotton-Eye Joe, waltz, ten-step polka, and 
electric slide line dance instruction.

An Intermediate Cake Decorating class is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4:30 
p.m. on Saturday, January 30. Projects will include a safari themed 
cake, us of pattern presses, a stained glass look cake, a cake with 
brushed embroidered flowers, and flower making using royal icing. The 
cost of the class includes a cake decorating kit.

Photography

A Digital Photography class will be held from 6-9 p.m., Each Tuesday 
and Thursday, January 26 through February 2. This class will show you 
how your camera works, and then help you optimize your camera for your 
specific needs.

Workforce Development

An OSHA General Industry Safety class will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 
p.m., each Saturday, January 23-30. This class provides an awareness 
of general industry safety and health concerns in the general 
industry. Required OSHA topics will be covered. Upon successful 
completion, participants will receive a Department of Labor OSHA 10 
hour general safety and health course completion card.
