Pickton United Methodist Church Youth
Host Sweetheart Banquet and Send Care Packages
to Haiti
by: Bobby McDonald
The Pickton United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall was decorated for Valentine's Day
on Sunday night, for the annual Sweetheart's Banquet.
It's been a busy week for the Pickton United Methodist Church Youth Group, as they planned and hosted the annual Sweetheart Banquet on Sunday night, and completed care packages to be sent to earthquake victims in Haiti. On "Souper Bowl" Sunday, the youth first collected money, following services, and then bought items to put in care packages to send to Haiti. "We collected the money and then purchased the items to put in the packages," allowd Whitney Schepp. "Then on Sunday morning, we assembled the items and put each of them in packages to be shipped."
Included in the packages were a hand towel, a wash cloth, a toothbrush, a comb, nail clippers, and plastic adhesive strips, as well a money to purchase toothpaste, in their country. "We never know when something so devastating might hit our country, so we wanted to do what we could do to help them during this crisis," explained Taeler Schepp. "I don't thing we can even imagine what these people are experiencing!"

David Nichols, a member of Pickton United Methodist Church, provided a selection of
songs that appealed to Sunday night's crowd.
Meanwhile, Sunday night was the Sweetheart Banquet, that the Pickton United Methodist Youth host each year, where they honor the older citizens of the community. They decorated the fellowship hall with Valentine's Day decorations, served a meal of baked chicken and rice, strawberry, spinach and almond salad, green bean bundles, and strawberry ice cream, chocolate dipped strawberries and Valentine's cookies for dessert.
Entertainment was provided by David Nichols and members of the Pickton United Methodist Church reading Valentine's poems. Then, the evening was completed with member of the audience sharing how they met and began their lifelong marriages.

"It was a great night of entertainment and I really enjoyed hearing about how all of the older people in our congregation met each other," allowed Whitney Schepp. "It was a day of hard work and preparation, but a great evening for everyone!"
"I wonder if we will hear anything back from the care packages that we send to Haiti?" questioned Kelsey Huie and Myesha Buford. "Wouldn't it be great to get a letter back from someone, who got one of our care packages? But, then they are probably under such duress, that they don't have time to write!"
"We truly feel like kings and queens!" declared Gerald and Sherry Walters, after attending Sunday night's Sweetheart Banquet. "To enjoy a great meal, being served by the youth, and then entertainment being provided. It's great!"
Friends and neighbors in the Pickton Community gathered at Pickton United Methodist Church,
on Sunday night for the youth sponsored Sweetheart's Banquet.
