Bluegrass Night In Pickton Draws
Exceptional Talent and Crowd, Saturday Night
by: Bobby McDonald

It was a rare treat to travel to the rural community of Pickton, on Saturday night, where an exceptionally talented group of performers brought Bluegrass and Gospel music to the stage, in the monthly venue, featured on the third Saturday night of each month (with the exceptions of June & November, 4th Saturday). Four groups of musical groups performed to a "packed" house, Holly Bond and The Bluegrass Texans, from Paris, Salt Creek, from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Done For Him, from Gladewater, Texas, and my favorite, The Buddy and Tina Wright Group, that hailed from Lubbock.

A talented, Buddy Wright, demonstrates his abilities on the banjo....

and, was equally talented on the fiddle.....
The local venue is hosted each month by Floyd and Carol Favors, of Saltillo, and promises three or more talents on each evening. "It brings smiles to our faces, to uplift the local people through these music ventures," expressed Carol Favors. "Our 'pay-back' is the smiles from the faces of those who don't have to travel very far and leave warm in their hearts from a night of entertainment and enjoyment."

Mom, Pat, and sister, Tina, join him on the bass and mandolin.....

and all lent their voices in beautiful harmony to produce a soulful sound, characteristic of the African-American
Spirituals.....

The Buddy and Tina Wright Group was the last group to perform, on Saturday night, and featured members of the Ray and Pat Wright family. Ray plays the guitar; Pat plays bass and lends support in the vocals, while son and daughter, Buddy and Tina, play a variety of instruments (fiddle, mandolin, banjo, and guitar) and are featured on the vocals. The African-American family adds the soulful and haunting sound of a folktime spiritual, as they give a special rhythm and outstanding chords to the songs. Saturday night's performance included: "The Journey," where they asked the audience to sing along......"a mess of beans to grow.....a gator looked at me and laughed"....., "Orange Blossum Special" "Ghost Riders in the Sky," "Water, Cool, Clear Water," "Shennandoah," "Swing Lo Sweet Chariot," and closed their performance to a standing ovation, as they presented "Amazing Grace."

And, brother and sister were an awfully "mean" dueling fiddles, when they got "cranked up"......
You can access the Buddy and Tina Wright Group, on the internet, by going to their website at: www.buddyandtina.com.

Sister Tina, lends her voice to the family band and adds another beautiful voice in harmony....
"Tonight's performance was just outstanding," expressed one of the local attendees from Pickton. "It just makes you want to jump up and shout!"
Well, there was plenty of "hand clapping," and "foot stomping," in Pickton, on Saturday night. Mark your calendars for Saturday night, April 18th, when you can enjoy another opportunity for Bluegrass music in Pickton, Texas.
