It was "fast-paced" basketball action in Yantis, Friday night, as the Martin Mills Mustangs and Lady Mustangs came to town. The "state ranked" Mustangs managed to grap the "lead" in the district standings away from the Owls and the Lady Mustangs delivered another loss to the Lady Owls.

The Lady Owls managed to "stay-up" with the Lady Mustangs, during the first period, when the quarter ended in a 9-9 tie. However, during the second period, the Lady Mustangs outscored the Lady Owls by 5, bringing a 21-16 lead to the halftime intermission.

It was during the third period that the Lady Owls couldn't manage a basket and missed at the free-throw line as well, and the Lady Mustangs added 5 more points to their total, giving them a 26-16 advantage. During the fourth period, the Lady Mustangs "walked away" with the game, adding 18 points, when Yantis could only manage to connect with 7 points. The Lady Mustangs took the 44-23 victory home with them from Yantis. Lady Owls seniors Shelby Allen and Blanca Reyna were each held to 10 and 8 points, respectively.

In the Owl vs Mustangs game, the visiting team came out strong and continued a heavily defensive game on the Owls, thwarting the scoring efforts of Yantis, throughout the game. "It was one of our lowest scoring games, all year, and they just out-classed us tonight," expressed Yantis Coach, Jack Bowles. "We knew they were going to be tough, and we held them defensively to only 52 points, but they managed to thwart our scoring drives, as well! They're definitely a tough ball team!"

The score was evenly matched at 7-7, following the first period of play, but it was during the second period that the Owls fell behind, only scoring 7 points to 14 points for the Mustangs. Then, during the third period, the Owls managed to "cut the deficit" ending the quarter trailing by 7, 37-7. However, the during the fourth period, the Mustangs never let-up and managed to outscore the Owls, by adding 15 points in the bucket, as opposed to only allowing Yantis 6 points. The Mustangs took the "district lead" prize back to Martin Mills, with a 52-36 victory in Yantis, Friday night!

Yantis ace scorers Sophomore Ty Davis and Senior Tony Garcia were each held to only nine points, by Martin Mills, while both Kite and Fox led the Mustang attack with twelve points each.

"We'll face Martin Mills again, later in the season, and we've got some work to do, before we face them again," expressed Bowles. "They're going to be tough and the district championship could likely come down to the two teams 'facing it off' in the future!"

The Owls and Lady Owls host Campbell in Yantis, on Tuesday night, and travel to Quinlan Boles, next Friday night, as they continue district action.

Owl point guard, Allen Rose, who was injured in last Friday night's homecoming victory against Savoy, saw action on Friday night, but was still "favoring" a severely sprained ankle.
