State-Ranked Chapel Hill Wins
Freeman Parish Tourney, in North Hopkins
by: Bobby McDonald
Despite a valiant effort by the North Hopkins Panthers, State-Ranked Chapel Hill overtook them in Saturday night's Championship round of the Annual Freeman Parish Tournament, in North Hopkins.
"This tournament is meant to showcase the hard work, diligent effort, and outstanding sportsmanship of the student athletes at North Hopkins," expressed North Hopkins Athletic Director, Steve Tucker. "And, our North Hopkins Panthers gave it a great effort, but just couldn't overcome the powerful Chapel Hill team, to retain the tournament trophy here at home!"
The Freeman Parish Tournament is named in honor of Coach Freeman Parish, who passed away in April of 1995. During Mr. Parish's twenty-one year coaching career, he accumulated 535 wins and 172 losses, to retire with a 76% winning percentage. He also reached the state tournament on 7 occasions, 5 from North Hopkins, and two from Fannindel. Mr. Parish is best remembered for the State Championships of the 1950's and 60's, but his teams always exemplified the qualities of hard work, diligent effort, and sportsmanship.
