NETLA Board President, Kevin Gibson, reminds board members that it is "countdown" time to
the 2011 Market Show, scheduled for the end of February.

NETLA Organization Begins "Countdown"
To 2011 Show, at Board Meeting, Monday Night

by: Bobby McDonald

"Folks, it's countdown time to this year's 2011 Market Show!" warned Kevin Gibson, this year's Board President, at Monday night's board meeting in the SSISD Vocational Agriculture Building. "The Sale of Champions is a little over two months away and we've got to get the 'loose ends' wrapped-up and plans made for the event!"

Students all across Hopkins County are feeding, grooming, and training livestock projects for the February 24-26th, 2011 event. Animals have been purchased, feeding and exercise schedules have already been developed, and students are busy working with their animals for the February event. "We're looking at a record number of entries to be shown at this year's event," reported Gibson, as he addressed the board on Monday night. "Thus, we've got to get all the things in order to receive these entries and to make certain that everyone is ready for February!"

Local vocational agriculture teachers received the "raffle tickets" that their students will be
selling for this year's 2011 Market Show, on Monday night.

At Monday night's meeting, county vocational agriculture teachers and 4-H leaders received their "raffle tickets" for the show, and students will receive them in the next week, to begin selling chances on a side of beef, that will be awarded to the lucky winner at this year's show. Then, schedules were made for a parent's meeting for those youth and their parents, that are showing livestock at this year's show. The orientation meeting is scheduled for January 9th. Students must return their "raffle tickets" to the Hopkins County Extension Office by 5:00 p.m., on Monday, February 21st.

Amy Bowen reported that the ribbons, rosettes, belt buckles and show bags have been ordered by the Awards Committee, and Kim Price gave a detailed report on the Concession Stand Committee's needs and expectations.

Meanwhile, students will begin selling raffle tickets and getting preparations for the show underway, throughout the holiday season. "Everyone else may be celebrating a 'break' during the holidays, but these projects must be cared for, groomed and fed throughout the season," advised Gibson. "We have many things to get accomplished before February, and we're expecting a great show!"

Veteran vocational agriculture teachers, Dannie Johnson of Sulphur Springs, and Johnny Lennon,
of North Hopkins, discuss some of the details of the February 2011 Market Show.

"It's the time of year that many businesses make plans for 2011, and we want to ask them to consider being a part of our show and sale," advised Sale Committee Chairman, Brad Johnson. "The economy isn't the best in the world, but these youth are depending on us to make a difference in their lives, as they look toward college educations. There is no better way to help the outstanding youth of Hopkins County, than to become involved and purchase one of their animals in the Market Show and Sale in February. You're helping the youth of Hopkins County realize their goals and dreams, and funding an opportunity to make them outstanding citizens. Anyone wanting to be a part of this year's show, can give me a call and I'll be more than happy to help them make a contribution to the future of Hopkins County!"

Once again, the Hopkins-Rains County Farm Bureau will be sponsoring the Buyer's Luncheon, on February 23rd, and members of the sales committee will be contacting local businesses, seeking additional support for the youth of Hopkins County.

In other action at this month's NETLA Board meeting, it was announced that the Dairy Classic Show validation for heifers will be conducted on January 8th, and that volunteers to replace Master of Ceremonies and Announcer, Larry Spradlin, were being sought, as Larry still continues to be confined to rehab, following a fall and hip injury, in early November. "We need someone to step up and take the place that Larry has provided for a number of years!" advised Gibson.

The NETLA Board will meet again in January to make "last minute" adjustments to schedules and plans for this year's show!

Remember the NETLA Market Show and Sale in your budget for 2011!!!
