"Mudbugs On The Bayou"
by: Bobby McDonald

Do you know how to eat a "mudbug?" Are you willing to "suck the head?" Cajun style crawfish are enjoyed by a number of individuals and nearly everyone who tries them, seems to like them! Well, Saturday offered a unique event in historic Jefferson, when the Chamber of Commerce presented their 2009 "Mudbugs On The Bayou." It was crawfish by the pound, Crawfish Etouffee, and the traditional corn on the cob and spicey boiled potatoes, in downtown Jefferson, among historic buildings and live music.

With over 1000 pounds of crawfish from nearby Eunice, Louisiana, the eating was good and the fun began. Music was provided by the "Joe Joe Reed" Band.

Jefferson, Texas, offers the historian an unique experience, with plenty of antique shopping, a river boat ride, on the Big Cypress Bayou, provided by Turning Basin River Boats, and any number of adventures. Jefferson was the riverboat town that served as the "starting point" for many of those who settled Hopkins County. They arrived from states of the Old South, or perhaps through the port of New Orleans, and made their way to East Texas, via passage on the Red River, to Jefferson.

"History abounds in every 'crook and cranny' of the little town, located on the Big Cypress," expressed one attendee at Saturday's Crawfish Boil. "We love to just come and 'soak-in' the history of the area!"

You may have missed the Crawfish, in Jefferson, but next weekend offers another unique experience for the East Texas Traveler. The 62nd Annual Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club, presents "Grace and Charm Along the Bayou." This event will be featured on May 1, 2, & 3rd, in Jefferson, and will include tours of four of the historic homes in the city.....The French Townhouse, The Hudgins-Blake House, the Schluter House, and the Whitington's Terry House.

This couple from near Denver, Colorado, had never tried crawfish, but quickly learned to be fans,
as they consumed them by the pound.
The May 1st weekend also features a Civil War Reenactment in Jefferson, for your enjoyment, as well.
