Traditional Miller Grove
Year-End Stew Will Be Saturday
by: Bobby McDonald
By Saturday morning, the chickens will be boiling and several in the Miller Grove Community will be peeling potatoes and onions, as the aroma of Hopkins County stew begins to waft through the air, at the Miller Grove School. It's an age old tradition, that began back in the spring of 1940, to celebrate the building of the new school that had been opened that year.
What will continue on Saturday, May 30th, began with seven pots of Hopkins County Stew being made by community stew cooks, out beside the new school building. Well, they've moved it inside to the cafeteria, where it is air conditioned and made a few other minor changes, but basically the same ingredients of community fellowship and celebration of life are still the same. "Some things never change in Miller Grove," expressed Miller Grove reared resident Cherri Bessonett. "Folks from the community come together and enjoy a reunion of a sort and look forward to seeing those individuals who call our community home!"
This year's stew will be served at noon, on Saturday, and the folks in Miller Grove invite everyone to come join the teachers, the students, and community in their annual celebration. "There will be plenty of stew, plenty of homemade desserts, and plenty of ice tea for everyone!" stated Bessonett. "It promises to be another fine day to celebrate life in Miller Grove!"
