Lady Trojans Take Quarterfinals Victory
in "Down to the Wire" Finish, Tuesday Night
by: Bobby McDonald
It was truly a "sweet" victory for the Cumby Lady Trojans, as they managed to "go down to the wire" and defeat the #2 state-ranked, Overton Lady Mustangs, in Hughes Springs, Tuesday night. The Lady Trojans had been defeated by the Lady Mustangs in the same match-up last year, so a "little bit of revenge" was in order, as the Lady Trojans continue their quest for a State Championship and are ranked at the "top of the heap" in the 1-A standings.
"I know if we continue to advance the victories will just get sweeter and sweeter," allowed head Coach Shelley Jones, following Tuesday night's "heart-rendering" match-up. "But, all season we had talked about getting beaten by Overton, last year, as we made this same quest, and we knew with them ranked #2 in the state, they were going to be the 'hurdle' that we had to overcome, to even think about a state berth. We knew how important this game was and it definitely lived-up to the challenge and went down to the wire!"

"You're likely to have seen what should have been the state championship match for 1-A competition, here tonight!" expressed an observer from the hosting Hughes Springs. "It certainly was a game that you 'got your money's worth on your ticket price' and it gives you faith in the polls, because I definitely think these have got to be the best two teams in the state. It's just a shame they had to play each other in bracket, before taking a game like this to San Marcos, for the state title. The spectators at the state tournament 'missed out' by not getting to see this one, but anyone in the gym tonight, certainly saw some great volleyball! It came down to the minor things and the 'luck of the draw' and Cumby managed to hang 'til the bitter end! I commend both teams on an outstanding performance!"
There was loads of "nail biting" going on in the stands, throughout Tuesday night's game!

"And, let's not forget the crowd!" inserted another observer from Hughes Springs. "Those boys from Cumby 'picked up' the girls every time they were down and 'lifted them up' to continue to fight, by coming to the edge of the stands, and all the Cumby crowd was behind the Lady Trojans, throughout the game. That helps, when it's down to the wire, like a game this close. You could feel the momentum going through the crowd and they literally stood behind those girls throughout the game!"
