John 4:15-19, 29-30
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.
29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.
Sadly, the Church today has become known for calling out sin rather than rescuing the sinner. The lost know all too well what Christians are against but unfortunately, that’s all they know. When you read today’s scripture reference, you will undoubtedly notice that Jesus’ result and the results that the Church by and large is getting today are very different. You see, Jesus offered the woman water, not fire. He didn’t go off on a fiery rant about how miserable and sinful this woman was, in fact He did just the opposite. He offered her living water. She was fully aware of her shortcomings, she didn’t need those pointed out yet again. What she needed was hope that she could be cleansed and restored. All through the Bible water is representative of and used for cleansing, while fire represents purification. When the Church understands that purification is for the Body of Christ after she has been cleansed maybe she’ll stop trying to call fire down on the lost. The Body of Christ does indeed need the fire of God but it’s for her own refining not for burning any bridge that could possibly be a vital link to those who need the love and compassion of the Savior. What is your approach to those who are lost? Do you bring them a message of love and hope, or are you more concerned with pointing out just how lost they really are?
