Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

The term ‘counselor’ is often associated with someone who helps you cope while you’re going through a tough time, needing some sort mental or psychological assistance.  Counseling has become common place in workplaces, churches, and schools.  When Jesus is described as the Wonderful Counselor in today’s passage, it’s important to remember that while He will always answer every time you need any kind of help, the counsel that is being referred to is that of seeking wisdom or direction, not release from bondage.  Think about what your life would look like if had you sought and followed His counsel before every decision you’ve made.  How many regrets and hurts would you have been able to avoid?  How many relationship issues would have never come to fruition?  As you seek to know Him more as your Wonderful Counselor, make it a point to seek Him before you take that next step, make that decision, or move forward in that relationship.  While He will always be your deliverer, you can save yourself a lot of time and grief if you’ll first allow Him to be your Counselor. – Merry Christmas, Pastor Jeff
