Luke 10:38-42

38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary.  Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Commitments, obligations, responsibilities, priorities…Everyone has them.  Everyone has things in life that require their attention, time, and effort.  To accomplish them means having to put other things aside and intentionally focus on whichever task is the most pressing.  Throw spending time with the Lord, your family, and close friends into the mix and the weight life can almost be almost overwhelming.  Just like in today’s account of Mary and Martha, consideration must be given to what’s important in the moment.  Was it important for Jesus and the others to be comfortable and fed?  Absolutely.  Was it important that the house was prepared and the dinner table set?  Of Course.  But in that moment, while Jesus was in the room teaching and imparting life to those who would receive from Him, the household obligations could have taken a back seat.  The dishes would be there later, the food could be left out a little longer, and the guests could fill their own water glasses, especially if it meant spending time with Jesus.  Who knows when an opportunity like this would present itself again.  In your life, the same applies.  Your time with Jesus, your family, and your church should trump the other obligations that will always be there.  Are those things important?  Yes.  But in the moments that really have eternally bearing, they are not.  Take time in your life to determine what’s important versus what’s important in the moment. – Love and Blessings, Pastor Jeff
