Luke 10:38-42
38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

A lot people, when they read today’s text, get the impression that Martha was this hard, all business, no pleasure type with a bossy streak. They see her making a fuss over everything that she had to do and everything that her sister wasn’t. But, if you’ll look more closely, you can see that most of what Mary did was right. She made a place for Jesus, she made a place for others to meet Him as well, and she was doing her best to see that all were accommodated for. In fact, Mary’s moment with Jesus doesn’t happen without Martha’s hospitality. The breakdown occurred when her opportunity turned into obligation because her focus switched to the task instead of Jesus. In your life, if you find yourself getting frustrated with commitments that you’ve made and the things you once enjoyed are now just obligations on your calendar, it’s time to re-evaluate the status of your relationship with Jesus. Serving will quickly begin to feel like slavery when your walk with Him is given less priority than the things that you’re doing for Him. If you’re currently in place of frustration and aggravation with the things that you once enjoyed doing to serve in the Kingdom, ask Him to show you where your priorities got out of place. Spend some time at His feet, let Him speak life into you, and experience the joy of life with your Savior again. – Love and Blessings, Pastor Jeff
