Isaiah 61:1
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.
Depending upon how you were brought up as a believer you may, or may not have, been taught about or exposed to the anointing. When you mention ‘the anointing’ to most Christians the conversation usually ends up taking a turn to a conversation about Spiritual gifts. While the two operate hand in hand, if you have gifts without the anointing it’s like that Christmas morning when you were a child. After you had opened up all the presents you couldn’t use any of them because you didn’t have any batteries. You were excited for what you had received but those things were useless unless you could find a way to get some power to them. Unfortunately, this could describe many churches. You have a big building full of gifts waiting to be used, you’ve drawn the crowd, but the individuals walk out the same way that they came in. The problem lies in the fact that gifts are simply that…a gift. They are free to anyone who wants them. The anointing however comes at a much higher cost. When Jesus stood up and quoted today’s text, He had just returned from a 40 day fast and battle with the enemy. This is not to say that this is the only way you can receive the anointing, but if you want it to be powerful in and on you it will require some effort by way of sanctification on your part. The cleaner the vessel, the cleaner it’s contents will be. Are you wanting the power of God to operate in your life and have a not just a gift for show.
