From Hope Cain, Sulphur Springs Public Library Director:

Sulphur Springs Public Library’s Fun with Mary Poppins Summer Reading Program has come to an end.

On May 31, 275 attended the summer reading programkickoff and we had a record number of checkouts that day – 437 – in one day!!!

We saw a record number of checkouts for June – 5017 – that broke last year’s record by almost 500!  We signed up 244 new patrons and 520 attended our programs.

There have been 335 reading logs completed and 67 young people have completed their three logs as of today.

The programs are going strong.  Storytime is a big hit for the kids in the area. We have had prizes, special guests and exceptional books and songs.  Mary Poppins surprised us with Bert for two storytimes – what fun! Brett Roberts the Bubble Guy amazed us with all you can do with bubbles and Will Parker the Music Guy gave us some great sing-along songs. Texas A&M Chemistry Road show was amazing and we learned a lot about chemicals, acids, bases and polymers! There was even some fire and explosions! Wow!

You won’t want to miss the Shining Star Productions’ Mary Poppins on July 20-22 at the Civic Center.  Her storytimes here at the library have been amazing, right?!!  We have tickets for sale at the library, with a discount!

Tuesday July 17 at 10am, we will welcome a knight from Medieval Times for storytime.  You will not want to miss this one.  He brings good life lessons on honesty and chivalry.

We will finish our reading program this summer with Tuesday Storytimes on July 24 and 31 at 10am and stories and songs will continue our Fun with Mary Poppins theme. Minecraft will end on July 27 and the last day to turn in reading logs is August 2.

So far, this has been a record-breaking year.  That is not only good for the library, but it is good for the children.  When a child completes the three reading log challenge, they will have read 8 ½ hours this summer!
