Healthy Texas Youth Ambassadors Sought
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Hopkins County and all across the state are currently recruiting high-school age youth to apply for the Healthy Texas Youth Ambassador program. Youth will be trained to serve as a community health and wellness advocate and assist Extension agents in providing leadership to the youth components of Healthy Texas. Youth Ambassadors can coordinate educational events that will encourage better health in our community.
Youth ambassadors may be 4-H members, but do not have to be. Members of School Health Advisory Committees (SHAC), high school health career programs, high school culinary programs, and even home school associations are invited to apply.
When developed as leaders and utilized to serve and lead, Youth Ambassadors can be an additional source of outreach and advocacy, similar to our Master Wellness Volunteers. Opportunities for involvement by Healthy Youth Ambassadors include:
- Assisting with Walk Across Texas celebration events, recruiting school teams and entering class miles
- Advocating for health and nutrition in schools, at health fairs, or during community events
- Leading social media efforts on general health topics or marketing programs
- Researching critical health issues in the county
- Develop and deliver educational programs for 4-H club meetings
- Many more opportunities!
Applications are currently available at the Hopkins County Extension Office, 1200 W. Houston, Sulphur Springs, and must be completed and returned by May 1, 2018. Applications will be review and interviews will take place in May. Youth will be notified of acceptance on June 1. Youth who are selected will participate in a regional Healthy Texas Youth Ambassador Summit for training. In our region, the training will take place on June 26, in Dallas. The cost is $75, which includes meals and training materials. If ambassadors are unable to attend the summit in our region, they may attend another location in July.
Again, eligibility requirements include:
1) Must be in a at least the 9th grade at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year
2) Must submit a completed application to the local County Extension Office by May 1, 2018
3) Must be academically eligible.
