at Hot August Night Event

Saturday was certainly "a hot August night," but not as hot as it has been at times, thanks to a "cool spell," and local patrons came out to enjoy music, eat some great BBQ, and support the volunteer fire departments of Hopkins County. "It was great, is all we can say," exclaimed Dawn and Craig (Moose) Morgan, organizers of the event. "It's the biggest event we've had to date, with over 1,000 people, and it just keeps growing and getting better every year!"

The judges had a hard time making decisions on which was the best BBQ entries.

Looks like Meredith Caddell is having a hard time convincing Police
Chief Jim Bayuk as to which of the BBQ entries was best.....

Organizers were still counting receipts on Monday morning, and didn't have a total yet. However, the crowd seemed bigger and the BBQ just gets better every year!

Local Boy Scouts posted the colors at Saturday's events.

The Sulphur Bluff Volunteer Fire Department was named the winner in the BBQ Cooking Contest, besting out some stiff competition from departments across the county. "Ours would have placed higher, if we hadn't been called out to fight a grass fire," bemoaned one of the other departments, as many of the departments were busy fighting fires, during Saturday's contest. However, Sulphur Bluff will have "bragging rights" for the entire next year, as the best cooks in Hopkins County.

The Sulphur Bluff Volunteer Fire Department won the BBQ Cooking Title for 2010.

Left to right, Tira, Sulphur Bluff, and Dike Fire Chiefs accepted their cooking awards.

I was fortunate enough to taste some of their sausage and brisket, and I'll have to agree with the judges, "it was some mighty fine eating!"

Runner-up in the cooking category was the Tira Volunteer Fire Department, winning 2nd place.

Third prize in the cooking contest was awarded to the Dike Volunteer Fire Department, for their entry.

In the "Non-Fire Department" Cooking Contest, it was the cooking team of the title sponsors, Farmers Electric Co-op, that took home first prize. Second prize was awarded to the Hopkins County Law Enforcement team, and third prize went to the Hopkins County Memorial Hospital EMS team.

Farmers Electric won the "Non-Fire Department" Cooking Title.

Of course, it wouldn't be a firemen's event, without inter-department muster games, and it was the Arbala Volunteer Fire Department, that "walked" or should we say, "stumbled" away, with the Bucket Brigade Contest. All of the contestants were "mighty tired" after lugging buckets of water across the field, and having to throw them into a larger bucket, from a distance.

Mary Humphrey was amazed that some of the physical demands on firemen were much more
difficult than she thought.

The Ladder Climb section of the muster games was won by the North Hopkins VFD and the Midnight Alarm section of the contest, where participants must "suit up" in gear, quickly and successfully, was won by the Brinker VFD.

Music throughout the night was provided by a number of talented entertainers, that were headlined by Rick Trevino. Other groups providing quality entertainment included: Christen Sawyer, Jerry Audley, James Lann, and Rio Grand.

The fire departments had sold chances on a "0-Turn" John Deere Lawn Mower, from Ag-Power Inc. The lucky winner was Fred Yelvington. Anna Randolph won the John Deere String Trimmer, and The John Deere Blower was Tina Edwards.

A great night of entertainment and eating was enjoyed by everyone!
