It was a Western experience for handicapped youth all across Northeast Texas, on Friday morning, as they participated in the annual Handicapable Rodeo, sponsored by the UPRA and the local Key Club, who were joined by the Pilot Club, High School Leadership Class, and other organizations. The event allows youth with disabilities the opportunity to "explore" the world of rodeo, by possibly riding a horse, attending the petting zoo, playing games of gold and ball, roping a "roping dummy" or even riding a mechanical bull.

"This is the highlight of many of these student's year!" exclaimed one of the teachers who accompanied her students to the Hopkins County Civic Center, on Friday. "The youth of Hopkins County come out and provide enough help, that many of these students have the opportunity to experience something they could never do anywhere else!"

"We're all about helping those individuals with brain injuries," expressed one of the Pilot Club members. "So, it is only natural that we join in this project and provide games for the children. We're providing miniature golf games and a ball-throw game, for them to enjoy!"

Students from Como-Pickton, North Hopkins, and Miller Grove Schools joined the Sulphur Springs High School Key Club in providing help in lifting the youth, moving wheel chairs, and being a "buddy" for each of the youth, as they made their ways to ride a horse, go on a hayride, or participate in a number of activities.

"It was a great, great day for everyone!" exclaimed one of the UPRA Rodeo clowns, who will be in the arena tonight at the rodeo, as a bullfighter. "When you see the faces of these children 'light-up" it says it all and touches you deep in the heart!"
